How to Become a Tutor

As a work-at-home mom, you likely need to find jobs that are flexible and will work around your family’s schedule.  One of the best jobs for flexibility is that of a tutor.  If you were a former teacher, or if you have a knack for explaining difficult concepts in a way that helps others understand, you may want to consider these tips on how to be a tutor to help supplement your income.

How to Find a Tutoring Job

There are many ways to find a job as a tutor:

Put up fliers—The old-fashioned way to find a job as a tutor is to put up fliers in and around schools where your target audience attends.  You may even be able to put up fliers in college dorm rooms or in high school offices.

Look on CraigslistCraigslist has a large job section.  You could advertise your services there, or you could look to see if others are looking for a tutor.  If you go this route, make sure to meet the student in a public location for safety reasons.

Find jobs online—This is probably the best way to find tutoring jobs, especially since many of them will not require that you leave your home.  You could easily tutor at night from home, after the kids are in bed or during the day if they attend school.  Some good sites to use include tutor.com and wyzant.com.  The most in-demand jobs that pay the highest rate are those in math, science and foreign language.

This kind of work can offer you flexibility and enjoyment.  If you prefer to be a tutor online, you can set your own hours, though most tutoring companies require that you work a set number of hours per week.  In addition, tutoring can be fulfilling as you help someone understand a concept that was previously confusing for them.  Seeing a student finally understand a concept can be rewarding!
