Make Money Writing Articles Online

Many women love to write, but until recently, using their writing skills to make income has been a difficult endeavor.  Thanks to the internet and the popularity of blogs, writing for pay is becoming more common.  If you love to write, there are many ways to make money writing articles online.

Finding the Jobs

The first step is to find writing jobs.  There are several places you can look:
  • Craigslist—Go to your city and look under the “jobs” heading and then “writing and editing.”  Depending on your location, there may be several jobs a day listed.
  • Problogger Jobs Board—This site regularly lists writing jobs as well as editing work for a variety of genres.
  • WAHM blogs—There are several WAHM blogs that highlight jobs including here at 1099 Mom - The Work at Home Wife, and Work at Home Mom Revolution, to name a few.
  • Job Sites—Other sites such as and offer freelance writing jobs, but these are often low paying because you are competing with writers in other countries who can, and do, offer much lower rates.
Advertising Your Services

You can also proactively advertise your writing services:

1) Develop your own website.  You don’t have to spend much money, especially in the beginning, but it is important to create your own presence on the web and create a “home” for those looking to hire a writer to find you.  You can include links to articles you have written as well as writing services that you offer.

2) Place an ad for your services.  Bloggers Classifieds is a new site where you can place your own ad sharing the services you offer, including freelance writing;  We also recommend Thumbtack.

How Much Will You Make?

When you first begin writing articles online, low pay, unfortunately, is not unusual.  You may be willing to accept low pay such as $5 for a 500 word article for a short time to build your resume and experience.  However, try not to stay at this level for more than a few months.  As your experience and portfolio increase, slowly increase your rates. (Freelance writers with ample experience and ability to market themselves can make up to $75 - 300 for articles!)

If you enjoy writing and are good at it, there are plenty of ways to make money writing articles online.  While the pay may be low at first, as your experience increases and your writing improves, you should be able to also increase your rates.
