Tips for Becoming an Online Entrepreneur: Being a Food Blogger

Today’s “I Want to Be” Series features Jessica Fisher, who works from home part-time as a food and mom blogger, as well as a cookbook author.  She also home schools her six children, ages 14 to 3.  Find out how to connect with Jessica at the end of this article.

How long have you had your business?

I started working as a freelance writer when I was pregnant with my fifth child, in 2006. I started blogging and writing self-published ebooks in 2008. I started working on a cookbook, Not Your Mother’sMake Ahead and Freeze Cookbook, for a mid-size publishing house in 2010.

What led you to pursue it?

When I first started writing for magazines, it was to have a little fun money. Within a year or two, we decided to get serious about paying down our debts, so I worked harder at freelancing and started a blog.

Are you full time or part time?  If part-time, do you anticipate switching to full time?

I work part-time, currently attempting to put in 20 hours a week.

How do you market your business?

I have a website for my freelance writing, Jessica Fisher, and two blogs, Life as Mom and Good Cheap Eats.

What is your favorite part of the business?

I love reading letters from readers who've been helped by something I've written.

What one question do you get most from people about your business?

People don't really ask me questions. Ha!

What one myth or misconception do you want to dispel about the work you do?

I don't always write in my pajamas.

What advice do you have for others who want to get into a similar opportunity?

Write as often as you can, be open to feedback, and research the different markets where you might get published. And develop thick skin for rejections.

  1. Do you have any recommendations on how to get started as a freelance writer? I believe I have talent, but other than my blog which is not world-renowned (yet), I have no idea where to start!
