Tips to Become a Bookkeeper

Today's "I Want to Be" Series features Nikki Hughes , a bookkeeper, blogger, homemaker and more!  Nikki recently released Your Blogging Business, a must-have resource for keeping finances and tax info straight when you blog!  Find out how to connect with Nikki at the end of this article.

How long have you had your business?

I have three businesses: I have had my own bookkeeping business for the last 3 years (before that, I worked at a CPA firm as a tax accountant). I have been blogging professionally for just under a year -- I love it! I have also been a full-time sahm/wahm for 2 1/2 years.

What led you to pursue this business?

I wanted to be able to keep my skills sharp as an accountant. I figured just focusing on mommy duties would not hone the numbers skills! So I started bookkeeping for select small businesses. I then discovered the vast blogosphere and just had to break in!

Are you full time or part time?

I am part-time. Once my kiddos get to school age, I will turn to more part-time, but still not full-time. Keeping my home is my first job, and it takes a lot of my time!

How do you market your business?

Internet! Due to my success at blogging, I was hired as a brand ambassador for a really great company. I get to be their social media manager and find that I don't have as much time for bookkeeping as much as I did before. I prefer the creative social media avenue, so I am turning my attention there (for now!). It is amazing how one door (blogging) opened the door to such a different business than I was used to. I use Facebook pages for my business (Christian Mommy Blogger is my blog, Your Blogging Business is for my book). I also have websites for whatever I do so I can have a place to send people!

What is your favorite part of doing this line of work?

Flexibility. Creativity. Change.

What one question do you get most from people about running your business?

How do I find the time to do "this" and take care of my family AND have dinner on the table. My answer? THE LORD! Somehow He gives me the strength and helps me prioritize :)

What one myth or misconception do you want to dispel about the industry or career?

You won't make millions blogging. It will take more time from you than you think. And writing an eBook is WAY harder than I ever imagined. That being said, you set your schedule and can do it on your timeline. So if it is really hard or taking longer than planned to accomplish something, you can simply NOT do it. You don't get THAT freedom with a full-time, 9-5 job!

What advice do you have for others who want to get into a similar opportunity?

Do your research to find out what it entails. And then, make sure you ONLY commit if you are fully passionate about it. If not, you will burn out and have zero desire to continue.

What is the first step?

For any of my businesses, I would recommend getting a website (blog) started and just learn the ropes. I truly believe anyone can do it if they schedule their time and take the time to learn how to do it well.

What websites or books do you recommend for tips?

I would definitely recommend DIYMinistry.org. Amy Bayliss is totally amazing. Also I would recommend Blogging with Amy's Tell Your Time to help with scheduling. And of course, Bloggingwithamy.com. She can get anyone up and going on a blog!

Be sure to check out Nikki's new book Your Blogging Business: Tax Talk and Tips from a Bookkeeper Turned Blogger and her blog Christian Mommy Blogger.   You can also chat with her on Twitter and her Facebook pages (#1 and #2).  (Nikki also has a free eCookbook to offer her new subscribers!)

  1. This is a huge help for someone who wants to become a bookkeeper or who wants to start a bookkeeping business.
Bookkeepers are important for business nowadays. They are equally important like the accountants. It takes skills, training and an attention to detail for someone to create a great output. The business owners, instead of doing it by themselves, they usually hire an outsourced bookkeeper. By this, it's cost effective and it's got a huge chance of hiring a competent and talented employee. This article might help you more to become the best bookkeeper a company needs.
